Emma Mattress, one of the UK and Europe’s most successful bed-in-a-box mattress brands, has been named Europe’s fastest growing tech start-up at the Tech5 Awards.

The company, which launched into the UK last year, was presented with the award at a glittering ceremony at The Next Web conference in recognition of its exponential sales growth.

The Awards, run by international tech magazine The Next Web and global payment provider Adyen, seek to identify the fastest growing companies by revenue in six key European markets, which were then entered into the European Finals to identify the fastest growing tech start-up in Europe.

Emma Mattress beat off competition from nine other companies to win the German award, before scooping the crown as Europe’s fastest growing tech start-up thanks to its rapid expansion. In just two-and-a-half years, the company has gone from the brainchild of founder Max Laarman, to selling more than 120,000 mattresses across 14 countries.

With the simplicity and convenience of online ordering, delivery in just one to three days and a 100-night comfort guarantee, the company has been a major player in driving the digital transformation of the mattress industry, known for its complexity and long lead times.

Its success has been largely due to an investment in research and development (R&D) to create The Emma, a mattress suitable for a wide variety of body and sleep types. As an online retailer, the company is also able to incorporate direct customer feedback into its product roadmap allowing it to drive product development quickly. As a result, The Emma has been named best product in six European countries by independent consumer magazines, as well as securing a coveted ‘Which? Best Buy’ in the UK.

Max Laarman, founder and CEO of Emma Mattress says: “We are delighted to have been crowned Europe’s fastest growing tech start-up. This has been a hugely exciting couple of years, during which time, Emma Mattress has grown from just a handful of people in 2015, to a team of more than 160 employees catering to the needs of a global customer-base.

“With an in-depth knowledge of the market and a focus on R&D, we have succeeded in creating a great product and a business model that meets the needs of our time-pressed customers. The award is a testament to the hard work of the entire Emma Mattress team and confirms our commitment to continuing our innovative course and maintaining our ambitious growth.”

2018 has been an exceptional year for Emma Mattress; as well as winning the Tech5 Award, founder Max Laarman joined the ranks of Forbes’ 30 under 30 list of Europe’s most talented young entrepreneurs in retail and ecommerce.
